Iniziamo questa intervista parlando di come tutto è cominciato, quando è iniziata la tua passione per la musica e quando hai capito che era quello che volevi fare nella vita?
La mia passione per la musica è iniziata da abbastanza giovane. Mia mamma è un'insegnante di musica quindi c'era sempre musica in casa. Un tempo cantavo alle jam nights locali all'età di 2 anni ahah ero sicuramente la persona più giovane nella stanza. Non ho iniziato a scrivere canzoni fino all'età di 12 anni. L'ho fatto solo per hobby fino a quando qualcuno mi ha detto "hey sei abbastanza brava a farlo".
Come ti sei avvicinata alla scrittura di canzoni, c'è qualcosa di particolare che fai quando scrivi una canzone per trovare l'ispirazione e com'è il processo di scrittura?
Onestamente, l'ispirazione colpisce nei momenti più scomodi per me. Per esempio sedendomi a cena inizio a sentire una melodia nella mia testa e devo andare di sopra a registrarla prima che la dimentichi. O quando sto rimandando un certo compito che non voglio fare, finisco di solito a scrivere una canzone per evitare di fare quel compito. Non posso mai sedermi e dire "Okay sarò creativa ora" non funziona mai così sfortunatamente!
La tua nuova canzone 'I'm not pretty' parla di body positivity, quanto pensi sia importante diffondere un messaggio così bello, specialmente in una società in cui sei sotto la pressione di vivere all'altezza delle aspettative ed amare te stesso?
Penso sia estremamente importante e sono orgogliosa del movimento che questa canzone ha creato. Vorrei che il disformismo corporeo e i disturbi alimentari fossero stati affrontati di più durante la mia crescita. È decisamente qualcosa che colpisce un sacco di persone. Questa canzone è agrodolce perché molti di noi si ritrovano nel sentirsi 'non belli' ma ciò ci ha anche unito. Amo vedere come tutti ci stiamo sostenendo a vicenda. È davvero bellissimo.
Pensando alle tue canzoni 'Conviction' e 'Really Nice to Think About', immagina di doverle descrivere con un'immagine specifica o foto, come sarebbe e perché?
"Conviction" è stata ispirata dall'immagine della benzina in una pozzanghera. È colorata e brillante ma tossica e distruttiva. Era molto simile ad una relazione che avevo all'epoca. Una visione che mi viene in mente per "Really Nice to Think About" sarebbe qualcuno con i capelli spettinati, vestito con stivali di gomma ed una camicia di flanella strappata, seduta ad un tea party elegantissimo chiedendosi cosa ci facciano lì. Qualsiasi tipo di cosa fuori posto descriverebbe "Really Nice to Think About".
La tua musica sta ricevendo tanto supporto, quindi qual'è la cosa più significativa che una persona che un tuo ascoltatore ti abbia mai detto e c'è qualcosa che vorresti dire ai tuoi fans?
Ooooo buona domanda! Qualcuno è venuto da me dopo un concerto e mi ha detto "Beh, ovviamente non stai avendo successo perché non vuoi averlo" e ciò mi ha colpito fortemente. Ha visto il mio shock e mi ha spiegato che sono l'unica che sta fermando se stessa dal realizzare il suo sogno. Ha acceso un fuoco in me quella notte ed ho iniziato a lavorare più che mai.
Il mio più grande consiglio ai miei fans? Rendete il lavorare al vostro sogno un'attività quotidiana. Più vi esercitate nell'avere una visione chiara di quello che volete, più saranno le persone e le opportunità che arriveranno nella vostra vita per mandare avanti quell'obiettivo. Non abbattetevi mai per avere un giorno non produttivo, andate avanti e continuate a dire esattamente ciò che volete. Ci sono così tante cose che potete fare con la vostra vita. Avete il potere di vivere la vita che volete. Non mollate!!!

Let's start this interview talking about how it all began, when did your passion for music
started and when did you realized this was you wanted to do in life?
My passion for music started when I was quite young. My mom is a music
teacher so there was always music being played in the house. I used to sing
at local jam nights at the age of 2 haha I was certainly the youngest person in
the room. I didn’t start writing songs till I was 12. I just did it as a hobby until
someone told me “Hey you’re kinda good at that”.
How did you approach song writing, is there something particular you do when you write
a song to help you get inspiration and what is the writing process like?
Honestly, Inspiration strikes at the most inconvenient moments for me. Like I
just sit down to dinner and I hear a melody in my head and have to go upstairs
and record it before I forget it. Or when I am procrastinating on doing a certain
task I don’t want to do, I usually end up writing a song to avoid doing said
task. I can’t ever sit down and say “Okay I’m going to be creative now” it never
works like that unfortunately!
Your new song 'I'm not pretty' is about body positivity, how much do you think is
important to spread such a beautiful message, especially in a society where you're
under the pressure of living up to expectations and love yourself?
I think it’s extremely important and I am so proud of the movement that this
song has created. I wish that body dysmorphia and eating disorders were
addressed more when I was growing up. It’s definitely something that affects a
lot of people. This song is bittersweet because so many of us relate to feeling
“not pretty” but it has also brought us together too. I love seeing how much we
are all hyping each other up. It’s truly beautiful.
Thinking about your songs 'Conviction' and 'Really Nice to Think About' , imagine you
had to describe them with a specific picture or photo, what would it be like and why?
“Conviction” was inspired by the image of gasoline in a puddle. It’s colourful
and shiny but toxic and destructive. It was very similar to a relationship I was
going through at the time haha. A vision that comes to mind for “Really Nice
To Think About” would be someone with messy hair, dressed in gum boots and a ripped flannel shirt, sitting at the fanciest tea party questioning why they
were there. Any sort of displacement would describe “Really Nice To Think
About”.
Your music is receiving a lot of support so what is the most meaningful thing that a
listener ever said to you and what is something you would like to say to your fans?
Ooooo good question! Someone came up to me after a show and they said “Well
obviously you aren’t successful because you just don’t want to be” and that hit me hard.
They saw my shock and they explained that I am the only one that is stopping myself
from achieving my dream. They lit a fire in me that night and I started working harder
than ever.
My biggest advice to my fans? Make working towards your dream a daily activity. The
more that you exercise a clear vision of what you want, the more people and
opportunities come into your life that push those goals forward. Never beat yourself up
for having an unproductive day, just keep going and keep stating exactly what you want.
There are so many things you can do with your life. You have the power to live the life you want to. Keep Going!!!
